Our recent February Social Mixer explored the powerful theme of fear and how it shows up in our businesses and lives. The conversation revealed profound insights about transforming our relationship with fear from an obstacle into a catalyst for growth.
Here are the key takeaways from our gathering:
1. Fear as a Compass, Not a Barrier
One of the most powerful revelations shared was the idea that fear can serve as a compass rather than a barrier. When we feel resistance toward something in our business, it often signals the exact direction we need to move toward. As Phil noted,
"If I feel there's something that I have a huge resistance to or fear towards, it's almost like I've been working to train my brain... that's the thing I must do because if I feel that way, there's something there for me."
2. The Body Knows Before the Mind
Carolina emphasized the importance of working with our bodies when facing fear:
"If you want to follow your intuition, we all have intuition, but if you want to have the ability to follow through, you need to include your body in this game."
Many participants shared how physical sensations of fear provide valuable information that logical thinking alone can't access.
3. The Cost of Avoidance Exceeds the Cost of Action
Dr. Bronce Rice highlighted a perspective-shifting insight:
we often calculate the cost of facing our fears but rarely consider the cost of not facing them.
As Carolina reflected:
"The price that you pay not seeing who you are on the other side...the cost of you not seeing your vision is insane."
This realization helps tip the scales toward courageous action.
4. Physical Celebrations Anchor Success
Carolina shared a practical embodiment technique - physical celebration as an anchor for success. The simple act of raising your arms in celebration creates a bodily connection to achievement that you can access even during challenging times. "Every time you celebrate success in other people, you're celebrating and opening yourself for success," she explained. This physical gesture serves as a "mudra" that reminds your body of success.
5. From Emergency to Everyday Courage
Maria Gehrke noted how we naturally push through fear during emergencies without hesitation. The key insight was learning to bring that same decisive energy to business decisions:
"In those moments, there is absolutely no problem pushing through the fear or leaning into it because it's like you have no choice... What if other things are like that too? This is the right way to go. You have no choice."
6. Each Fear-Facing Experience Builds Confidence
Several members shared how past experiences of facing fear—from skydiving to ending marriages—created reference points that make future challenges easier to face. One member reflected: "Learning from that is that we can trust our gut and that our gut does know. And I can get through periods of fear... whenever I walk into fear, like I did in that situation, generally it leads to a breakthrough or something better."

The group explored how busyness and distraction often mask underlying fear. As Phil noted,
"You sign up for a million things, you do a million things, you work on your website endlessly because you're afraid to have a conversation... And it can be really sneaky too because it can feel like you're doing something that's meaningful when in fact you're just pacing yourself in circles."
As we closed our mixer, we were reminded of the power of community in facing our fears. Seeing others take courageous action despite their fears—whether reaching out to universities, making proposal calls, or sharing vulnerably—inspired everyone to identify their own next brave steps.
