I Met Someone Who Gets It (And He's Not Who You'd Expect)
How a candy seller's smile exposed the lie I've been telling myself about when fulfillment begins
Earlier this week I had to drive downtown in the city where I live. I stopped at a traffic light and saw a man holding a small plate with a message I couldn’t fully read. He was also selling candies.
I always respond to people in these situations. I don’t usually buy candies, but at least I open my window or make sure they see that I saw them—even if I’m saying no to their offer.
This time was different. As he got closer to my car, I could finally read his sign: I’m going to be a pilot.
He had this beautiful smile on his face. I opened my window, and he asked my name, offered the candies, and explained that he needed the pilot hours to finish his course and work with his passion.
His energy carried possibility. He was excited for his journey and gracefully asking for support to pursue his dream.
You could feel in his words the alignment he had with his vision—even while standing at a traffic light selling candies.
He has an instagram account and I was happy to learn he did his first flight in June :) If you feel like helping him, let me know.
What a reminder!
Can you stay connected to your vision even when it hasn’t arrived yet? Or do you get pulled into scarcity, so focused on what’s missing that you forget the joy of what’s already here?
Your current job—the one you don’t even like—could be a bridge to what is coming through your vision.
Your current plateau in business is not a reason to give up; it can be an invitation to curiosity.
Even your struggle with the way you charge may be a sign to look within.
All the things we can’t yet see in the outer world are invitations to turn inward first—to reconnect with joy, no matter what’s happening outside. They are all invitations for alignment. And alignment means this: feeling the feeling before you can see the vision—and trusting that by holding that state, the vision will soon become visible.
This guy has my admiration. First, because he is doing what he believes is possible to follow his dream. But even more than that, because he is doing it with joy, ease, and I am sure, with faith. I have no idea how much an hour of pilot school costs, but he was selling candies at $2 each. How many candies does he have to sell to pay for one hour? Probably many. But it doesn’t matter. He is clearly here for the long run, for the journey, for his life dream.
This essay is a reminder: alignment doesn’t happen in the future. The present of your life doesn’t begin when you reach six or seven figures. It happens now.
And if you are not able to enjoy the present moment, I can assure you: you will probably not be able to enjoy your vision manifested—even when it happens, if it happens.
The problem with dissatisfaction and frustration isn’t the outer world. It is your own wiring, designed for survival, not fulfillment. It is the way your mind is trained to fixate on the gap instead of the gift, on the absence instead of the presence.
I am Brazilian, but I lived in Canada for many years, and I have traveled to countries with much more structure and wealth than Brazil. Yet one gift of being here, and also being from here, is witnessing how people do more with way less.
The gift of seeing this guy smiling and speaking with excitement about his vision. The people making BBQ on the sidewalk while washing their cars—dancing, singing, and smiling inside an unfinished tiny house.
In Brazil, creativity isn’t optional—it’s how people survive. Out of scarcity comes invention. Out of limitation comes joy. There is music everywhere—in the cars, in the streets, in the body.
Joy is not postponed until life is perfect; it is practiced in the middle of imperfection. Being here teaches me again and again: fulfillment is not in what you have, but in how alive you are to the moment.
I once read Derek Sivers say something like: Go to Brazil to learn to enjoy the present, but don’t stay too long or you might forget the future. I may not have the exact words, but the essence stuck with me.
And that is my point: the joy, the grace, is present here, now. And when presence meets vision, life becomes extraordinary.
