What Would Happen If You Could See Yourself Through the Eyes of God?
Holy humor: Your invitation to giggle at your own drama
I often wonder about the magnificence of life. You probably too…
I was watching my little boy play the other day and a thought came to my head
how the heck did he come out of my belly?
Right then I turned my neck and saw this beautiful pomegranate tree, and the same question arose.
How did this fruit come to be?
And then a flower right beside it—it's magic after magic.
The tree that grows from a seed, but how do we have the seed? And when it grows, it gives a flower, that sometimes transforms into a fruit, and sometimes is just a flower.
Then a baby that 2 years ago couldn't walk or talk, had no teeth and couldn't hold his body up, is now this little human running around full of joy, eating and talking non-stop and asking questions and interacting with the world.
It's absolutely mind-blowing to pause and realize that there is something way bigger happening here.
That all these beautiful things don't require any thoughts or planning from us.
They unfold with an intelligence far beyond our understanding.
And yet we often get stuck in some drama, in an ugly self-talk that will not take us anywhere.
We become so serious, so burdened by our own thoughts and judgments.
If nature doesn't need to overthink its miracles, why do we?
I wonder sometimes if I could make God a person, they would be sitting in a nice armchair, slightly reclined, looking down at the human race and laughing.
Not mocking laughter, but the warm, knowing laughter of someone who sees the bigger picture when we cannot.
During an embodiment class, one of the participants shared this idea of God looking at us in traffic and saying, "Ohhh how cute it is, all these humans running, running, running, doing, doing, doing..."
And I thought to myself, for what? Running where?
I imagine God as this amused observer, finding joy in our earnest endeavors.
And if we are truly made in the image and reflection of the divine as many traditions teach, shouldn't we too approach life with more amusement?
Shouldn't we learn to laugh at ourselves with the same loving kindness that God might?
Instead, when we make a mistake—oh my God!—it's the end of the world. We are so negative and rigid with ourselves.
What if we could just laugh and say, "Oh well, I am learning, next time I will do better..."?
This rigid and rude mind blocks us from trying.
We frequently claim to fear being seen or fear failure, but what we truly fear is confronting that harsh inner voice that diminishes our worth. This critical part of ourselves judges us harshly, making us feel like the worst person in the world simply for making a mistake we knew better than to make
So often, we don't even try, because if we make a mistake, we'll be the first ones to bash ourselves down to ashes
It's a daily exercise, but I like to pause and contemplate: how would I treat myself if I was seeing me fully through the eyes of God? Seeing my potential, my beauty, my willingness to learn, and my quest to evolve.
What would I be doing if I could see myself through the eyes of God? So many possibilities, so much abundance.
So what would truly happen if you could see yourself through the eyes of God?
You would spend less time judging yourself for the things you thought you could do better and you would appreciate more your willingness to try to become better everyday.
You would see possibility and beauty everywhere you look. The world wouldn't be divided into successes and failures, but rather into endless variations of growth and learning.
Each experience, even the painful ones, would reveal themselves as teachers rather than punishments.
You would feel your own value just because you are, just because you live your life. You wouldn't need just another diploma to feel worthy, because your worth would be connected to your existence.
You would choose to feel your breath and through that feel blessed because you have the opportunity to be here, instead of spending your time complaining why things aren't working for you.
Each inhale would be a gift, each exhale a release of what no longer serves you.
You would share more of who you are and your opinions about life unapologetically, instead of trying to measure your words to please others.
You would say hi to more people and smile more during your day, instead of walking fast and looking down just so you can make it to the next appointment.
You would recognize the divine spark in every person you meet, making each interaction an opportunity for connection rather than an obstacle to your schedule.
If only we could shift from self-criticism to self-love and self-compassion, shift from frustration to curiosity.
If we could approach our mistakes with the same gentle amusement that God might—not as failures but as necessary steps in our unfolding.
This is not about believing; this is about recognizing we are part of this magic.
If you look around you and you don't see that there is an innate intelligence guiding everything—look again.
And perhaps, look with more amusement, with more forgiveness, with more wonder.
Look with the eyes of God upon yourself, and watch how your whole world transforms. The traffic jams, the spilled coffee, the missed deadlines—all of it becomes part of a beautiful, perfectly imperfect human experience that is, in its entirety, divine.
