Why I Don't Call Myself a Writer... And Write Anyway
How not needing a title or label opened the space to simply create.
In many different contexts and conversations lately, I’ve been saying I am not a writer, even though I do write a lot.
Until someone responded, “Oh, that’s funny you say that, because you probably write more than many people who consider themselves writers.”
It was an interesting comment.
I don’t even know how much a “writer” writes, I guess it depends on many factors, but it made me pause to reflect. Writing has been part of my life for over three years now, every single week, without missing one.
It wasn’t always joyful.
In the beginning, it was a chore. I didn’t always feel inspired, but I decided I would use writing to reconnect with my personal power and discipline, committing to something and doing it.
It has served my own process of transformation deeply.
It’s helped me refine my message, clarify my viewpoints, and reflect on my own life. Writing has been a big part of me getting to know myself and feeling confident about my own perspectives.
I write to publish on Substack, but I also write just for myself. They interconnect sometimes, but not always.
Right now, for our business (Sacred Business Flow), I write three essays a week. I have a list of topics that keeps coming to me, and if I needed to, I could sit down and write the essays for this week, and probably the next two weeks too.
I see writers sometimes talk about how they struggle to publish, and I don’t have that.
These conversations lately have helped me understand why.
If I am not a writer, I don’t carry the pressure they often place on themselves.
Not seeing myself as a “writer” has freed me from the pressure of perfection… it lets me write with honesty, consistency, and joy.
Because I went all in on creating a business from my heart, I see inspiration and connection with Sacred Business everywhere.
My three-year-old son taking a shower and asking me to wait a little bit before turning it off, just so he could feel all the drops of water on his body, becomes a topic completely related to the things I teach in my business, and therefore, an inspiration to write.
Moments like this remind me that everything in life can become inspiration for reflection and sharing, when I’m present enough to notice.
It’s also become clear that the more I give, the more I receive.
In my essays, I share techniques and tools I’ve paid thousands of dollars to learn. I share real experiences, my own learning, and my vulnerabilities.
And the more I give without restriction, the more life gives back to me.
There’s no shortage of ideas, only abundance, everywhere I look.
For quite some time, nobody read what I wrote… and I kept going, for myself.
Now I receive beautiful messages from people resonating with my words, taking something with them.
Maybe by society’s standards, I could consider myself a writer.
Or maybe I’m not there yet.
And you know what… it doesn’t change anything.
What matters to me is to keep showing up, to try to be more present to the simple moments of my everyday life.
And from those moments, to share… to share myself, my thoughts, my words, my happiness, and my joy with those of you who take the time to read.
Those who receive a bit of the love I pour into each essay I write.
Our ability to serve increases when we do for ourselves first.
This is not selfishness — this is self-love.
You can go to the gym to look good for others, but it won’t last.
If you do something out of self-love, you’re in it for the long run… you’re in it for transformation.
Do it for you.
And use the label if it serves you.
But if being a writer feels heavy, if it’s too attached to being perfect or meeting a standard that blocks you from just being you, that keeps you from publishing and sharing, then drop the label.
Or redefine it.
Find your own energetics around it. Let it be messy, fun, and loving.
In the end, it doesn’t matter what you call yourself, what matters is that you keep showing up for what wants to move through you.
With Love,
Carolina
