The Unexpected Gift
How the universe delivers exactly what you didn't know you needed
I woke up feeling excited—that seemed to be such a great idea and fun way of living.
My dream was so vivid.
Imagine being fully in the present moment and dealing with what is in front of you. It doesn't matter if it makes sense, you don't need an explanation, you don't even care about your opinion related to that topic—you just approach with grace.
In my dream, Phil and I were buying gifts for our clients. Not specific gifts for specific people, but random gifts guided by pure inspiration.
We were drawn to buy things that would require the receiver to take action and dedicate time to something completely new, we couldn’t just buy stuff, it had to be an experience.
We had an awesome photographic camera, a beautiful set of watercolors, a big bag of clay with pottery tools, language courses, a paraglider, gardening tools and books, and many other things.
We were having so much fun, shopping online for things we didn't know exactly how our clients would use or why, but the guidance felt so strong and clear that we didn't question it. We did the task and enjoyed doing it.
Then we created a kind of "wheel of fortune" and added all the prizes we'd collected. We would update it as we bought more items or took things away.
At some point in each client's journey—we never knew exactly when—we just knew it was their time to spin the sacred wheel.
It didn't matter where they were in their business or what their business was. This was a crucial step in their journey, and all of our clients would wait for this moment.
The beauty of it was that their gift was often completely “unrelated” to their business, but part of the path was to dedicate time to it with reverence and grace.
They would accept the gift as a gift from the divine, and in its randomness, they found bliss in their devotion. They had to study, take courses, learn how to use the gift, and become very good at it.
The client who received the camera learned to find beauty everywhere. They discovered their perspective was unique—when asked to photograph a flower with ten other colleagues, they all had different views, and that gave them the power to share their voice authentically.
The client learning pottery, when working with the wheel and making their first piece, learned to feel the clay and give it shape. They discovered that presence was required and the feeling of the clay was guiding them toward what came next.
The client who went paragliding learned courage and trust.
The client with the watercolor set learned there was no way to control the outcome—they had to surrender to how the paint flowed in the water.
The client learning a new language discovered how we express differently, how there is no right or wrong, but different ways of “speaking” life—how a new language can literally change the way we think.
In all the randomness of these events, the life lessons they gained gave them the ability to expand their business and their life experience. Each lesson became a new lens through which they approached their work: the photographer-healer saw beauty in their clients' struggles, the potter-coach learned to feel into what their clients truly needed, the paraglider-consultant embraced bold risks, the painter-strategist surrendered control to let solutions emerge, and the language-learner-entrepreneur discovered entirely new ways to communicate value.
It was such a joy to watch clients who never really thought of jumping with a paraglider or learning pottery find so much joy in learning something they never really planned.
I had this dream right after reading the chapter "Here's How to Live: Let Randomness Rule" from the book How to Live by Derek Sivers.
He says:
"You are less random than you seem, so randomize your life.
Use a random generator—an app, a roll of dice, or a shuffled deck of cards—to make all of your life's decisions.
Choose a life where you choose nothing.
Let the random generator decide what you do, where you go, and who you meet. It will scramble your habits..."
He goes on and ends with:
"You'll be living a lesson that everyone should learn.
Random stuff happens.
All you can control is your response.
Every day, you will practice how to react to chaos: with dignity, poise, and grace."
It made me remember when I was in my teens—my best friend from school and I would go to the bus stop close to the mall that was walking distance from our school and take the first bus that passed.
We had so much fun just waiting for the bus, not knowing where we would go. Sometimes the destination was fun, sometimes it was so random that we would say, "Oh no, really?" and laugh a lot.
Either way, we had fun.
We enjoyed the wait, the bus ride, the walk at the destination, and the way back home.
It made me realize how I forget about the beauty of presence, the joy just for the sake of joy, the happiness for no reason.
I overcomplicate things. I try to control the outcome or predict possibilities with my thoughts. I get stuck in my fears. I think I know better than the greater force that is behind everything. I overanalyze, thinking that there is a right choice. I lose touch with the present moment.
Just to be reminded that bliss is always available, that bliss is not random at all, but rather the most fundamental reality underlying all existence.
This divine bliss is pure consciousness, unchanging and eternal.
The message in my dream was clear: surrender, trust and have fun. You don't know as much as you think you know, so relax and enjoy.
So instead of having an opinion about how things should be or should go, what would it take for you, for me, to approach whatever is in front of us right now with presence?
Maybe it wasn't fully in your plans, but what if you treated it as a gift from the divine?
Perhaps the deepest randomness is letting go of who we think we should be and discovering who we actually are when we stop trying to control the journey.
Life is always offering us buses to unknown destinations.
The question isn't where they're going—it's whether we have the courage to get on and trust that the ride itself is exactly what we need.
Sometimes the very thing that makes you want to say "no" is exactly what your soul is calling you toward.
That opportunity that doesn't make logical sense, that invitation that scares you a little, that path that your mind dismisses as "not for you"—what if those are the sacred wheels spinning in your own life?
What if the universe is conspiring to help you become more of who you truly are, and all you need to do is get out of your head and follow your heart?
The magic happens when we stop overthinking and start trusting.
When we stop controlling and start receiving.
When we realize that maybe, just maybe, the randomness isn't random at all.
