065: The Sales Conversation You're Overthinking
A gentle guide for heart-centered conversations that convert
An entrepreneur was preparing for her first "real" sales conversation in her new business.
Her energy was familiar - that mix of excitement and terror that comes with putting ourselves out there.
The endless questions running through her mind:
What if I say the wrong thing? What if I come across as too pushy? What if I'm not ready?
Maybe you know this feeling.
That moment when someone expresses interest in working with you, and suddenly your mind fills with all the reasons you need to make it more complicated than it needs to be.
I get it. I've been there.
Back when I was just starting running my consulting business, I had endless scripts, frameworks, and "proven" processes. I thought I needed them all to feel legitimate enough to charge premium rates.
But here's what I've learned after supporting hundreds of entrepreneurs: The most powerful sales conversations aren't about perfect scripts or flawless frameworks.
They're about something much simpler.
They're about listening.
Really listening.
Not the kind of listening where you're waiting to insert your perfect pitch.
But the kind where you're genuinely curious about what's keeping someone up at night. About what they've tried before. About what they deeply desire.
Here's what this looks like in practice:
First, you simply ask them to share what's going on. What brought them to this conversation?
Then, you get curious. "Can you tell me more about that?" "What's been most challenging about this?" "What would you love to experience instead?"
Next - and this is where most people rush past - you mirror back what you've heard. "So what I'm hearing is..." This isn't just repetition. It's showing them you truly understand where they are.
Only then, once they feel fully seen and heard, do you share how you might help.
No fancy pitch deck needed. No complicated frameworks required. Just genuine human connection.
I watched this unfold yesterday as our entrepreneur realized she didn't need to overcomplicate things. She already had everything she needed - her expertise, her experience, and most importantly, her ability to truly listen and understand.
The relief in her voice was palpable.
Because here's the truth about sales conversations: They're not about convincing someone to buy something they don't need.
They're about creating a space where someone can share their challenges, be deeply heard, and see a clear path forward.
Everything else - the scripts, the frameworks, the perfect pitches - they're often just armor we wear to feel safe. But that armor? It gets in the way of real connection.
Keep This Close: A Simple Path Through Sales Conversations
When you find yourself getting lost in the conversation, here's a gentle framework to guide you back:
Open with curiosity: "Tell me more about what's going on with [their specific situation]?"
Listen for challenges: "What are you most concerned about?" (Then get curious about their answer)
Mirror back what you've heard: "Let me make sure I understand..." (This is where you show them you really get it)
Explore their ideal: "If we could remove these challenges, what would become possible?"
Double-check understanding: "Just to make sure I'm clear..." (Reflect back their challenges AND their desired outcome)
Make one clear invitation: Share the ONE way you think you can best help them (Not all your options - just the most aligned one)
Create space: After sharing your invitation and investment, pause. Let silence do its work.
That's it.
No complicated scripts. No manipulative tactics. Just genuine human connection and clear next steps.
Pin this somewhere close if you need it. But remember - it's just a gentle guide, not a rigid script. The real magic happens in the natural flow of conversation.
So I invite you to consider:
What if your next sales conversation could be simpler? What if you trusted yourself enough to simply listen and respond? What if you already had everything you needed to serve powerfully?
Remember: Your potential clients aren't looking for perfection. They're looking for someone who gets them. Someone who can help them move from where they are to where they want to be.
And that someone? It might just be you, showing up as yourself, ready to listen and serve.
With love,
Phil

Happenings
We hosted our first meeting of the Sacred Business Network this past Wednesday! Grateful for all who were able to join where we explored a power question together in community:
"What opportunities am I missing because I'm too busy looking elsewhere?"
If you are looking for a space where heart-centered entrepreneurs connect, support each other, and grow together, we're answering that call.
On December 30th, Carolina and I will be opening enrollment for something we've never offered before - a 30-day experience that serves two distinct groups:
For established entrepreneurs: If you're running a business but feeling scattered and overwhelmed, this will help you create systems that bring back clarity and sustainable growth.
For those just starting out: If you have a vision but aren't sure how to turn it into reality, this will give you the foundations and confidence to move forward with purpose.
Over the years, we’ve helped hundreds transform their planning approach. Here's what they've achieved:
For established businesses:
Doubling revenue while working fewer hours
Getting teams aligned and focused
Creating sustainable growth systems
Falling back in love with their work
For new ventures:
Turning visions into clear action plans
Building strong foundations from day one
Moving forward with confidence
Making consistent progress from the start
And this January, we are sharing our complete system in a powerful 30-day experience.
The program is called...

If you are using AI to edit your writing, this is an excellent tool for ensuring your “human” aspects are shining through. As I’ve shared in many places, I don’t advocate for writing with AI, but I feel it can be an excellent editing or brainstorming partner.
Building a Knowledge Library for Creative Work
Here is an an excellent presentation on exploring how to leverage AI for the mechanical aspects of information management while focusing human energy on the creative work that matters. Thanks

Thank you SO MUCH for articulating this process, Phil. It makes it all so much more "real" to me -- more in line with who I am and how I'm trying to help people in this world.
